Dear Church Family,

You won’t find this in the book of Psalms, but I wonder if David ever asked this question: “What do you do when someone throws a spear at you?” This was an important and timely question for a young man who was seen by a jealous and mad king (Saul) as being a threat. So, what do you do? Some would say, “why you pick up the spear and throw it back!” I mean, after all, when someone throws a spear at you, just wrench it out of the wall and throw it right back! Everyone else does, right? But unlike everyone else, David did not throw it back. In fact, even when given the chance, he did not take Saul’s life. All David did was dodge the spears.

You can easily tell when someone has been hit by a spear. They turn a deep shade of bitter. David never got hit and consequently he discovered three things:

1. Never learn the art of spear throwing
2. Stay away from people who are spear throwers
3. Keep your mouth shut
If you do this, then spears will not likely touch you, and even if they do, they won’t pierce your heart.
