Vision and Mission

Our Vision at Bowling Green Baptist Church is to be a church that excites the community to worship and serves the Lord through love and caring for each other.

Our mission is reaching people for Christ and making a difference in their lives through continuous prayer, sustaining relationships, caring ministries, and spiritual growth.

We are affiliated with both the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist General Association of Virginia. Locally, we are part of the Hermon Baptist Association.

What We Do

Bowling Green Baptist has worked to persevere and intentionally adapt to changing times and challenges in terms of worship styles, outreach efforts, updating facilities, global pandemics, and ways of doing ministry.  It is our conviction that, in partnership with a committed leader, we can turn the church toward growth and continued outreach and impact in our community.

The mission at Bowling Green Church is, “Reaching People for Christ”.  We pursue this vision along five different avenues:

  1. Providing opportunities for quality blended worship which includes contemporary and traditional music, with children’s choirs and bell choirs performing periodically.
  2. Nurturing believers in their walk with Christ through Christian education including Sunday school, prayer and Bible study groups, and Beginnings Preschool.
  3. Encouraging participation in missions:
Opportunities include Kidz Nite, occurring every Wednesday night for children within the community. Attendance averages 60+ children per evening. Each Kidz Nite includes dinner, worship lessons, recreation and crafts. Other missions activities include: Operation Christmas Child, various SBC missions giving initiatives, WMU, Cookies for Christ, Vacation Bible school, and local, national, and international mission opportunities.
  4. Demonstrating Christian love in our community, including hosting the Blood Mobile quarterly, and a food pantry monthly, and reaching out to the community through WMU initiatives such as the Angel Tree, and supplying Thanksgiving baskets to local families in need during the Holidays.
  5. Living our mission in an environment of love and joy through the Care Team (reaching out to the sick and needy in our church community through a card ministry, visits, meals and calls), the Hospitality Committee (especially sending food out to shut-ins and elderly after church fellowship events), and Praying Hands (weekly prayer group).

History

Bowling Green Baptist Church is on Main Street in Bowling Green, the county seat of Caroline County, Virginia. The church is found about 38 miles north of Richmond and 20 miles south from Fredericksburg, Virginia.  The church was built in 1878 to establish a Baptist presence in the town and area.

Beginnings Preschool

In 2013, Bowling Green Baptist Church opened a Christian-based preschool for rising 3- and 4-year-olds in our area. Beginnings preschool is a labor of love for our church as we strive to reach the community for Christ. We are blessed to provide this learning opportunity for children in our community.

Utilizing play-based, interactive units of learning, our teachers will use their educational background to create a learning environment that will be active, developmentally appropriate, and, of course, lots of fun! Enriching and wholesome activities will keep your little ones quite busy and happily engaged. At Beginnings Preschool, we see each child as an individual with his/ her own strengths and needs.

Membership

We have an active congregation of 100 to 125.  Sunday School classes are available for all ages from pre-K through senior adults.

Facilities

Our main church building consists of a sanctuary built in 1875, which includes a pulpit, choir loft, baptismal, balcony, Sunday school classrooms, and bell tower. In 2005, a Family Ministry Center was added to support community outreach. The room was designed for multiple activities, with a full-court basketball/volleyball set-up, two single-use restrooms, a projection screen, and a commercial kitchen. For added security and convenience, a keypad entry system was recently added.

The church also owns two homes, which are currently used as temporary rental properties and would be available as housing for our new pastor and family if they desired.

Worship

Until recently, Sunday mornings consisted of two worship services: a contemporary style service at 8:30 am, and an 11am Traditional Service, held in the sanctuary. Today, we have one worship service that combines contemporary and traditional music.

Finances

Bowling Green Baptist Church is free of debt.  On an annual basis, the finance committee develops a capital and operating budget which is approved by the church membership. Expenditures are checked and communicated with the church family at least quarterly at Business Meetings.
